Headline: Toronto-based artist sells first ever digital house in the world for over $600,000

Dek The mars-based house may be worth more than your own real-life house

Body:

Toronto artist Krista Kim has sold the world's first ever digital NFT (non-fungible token) house, located on Mars, for CAD $612,132.

While the Mars mansion is beautiful to look at with floor-to-ceiling windows and glass furniture overlooking a mountain range, it doesn't physically exist. Instead, it is a 3D file meant to be explored via virtual reality.

Based on blockchain technology, NFTs are digital certificates of ownership which allow owners to explore digital artworks and designs and can also be sold and collected.

Kim designed it in 2020, and worked with an architect using Unreal Engine, a software commonly used for creating video games. SuperRare described Kim's design as a space that embodied her philosophy of meditative design. It has been described as a "light sculpture".

She told Dezeen that the house can hopefully be experienced in an augmented reality (AR) one day, with the use of apps like Superworld.

"Soon, we will all live in AR through our real environments using SuperWorld, a new app that has mapped the entire world for AR interface," Kim told Dezeen following the sale.

"Virtual real estate based on the real world can be purchased on SuperWorld, and in the very near future, this app will allow us to mint 3D NFTs and create a marketplace of digital AR assets."

"Mars House is ready for that future, where it can be transposed onto our real environment and enjoyed with others," she added.

This might be the first digital house to have sold, but seems like it certainly won't be the last.
